That really depends on what you’re looking for from your ski holiday.
December: Christmas in Cervinia

Snow conditions can still be very good, particularly higher up the mountain, although lower slopes can become softer as the afternoon goes on.
For us, there’s something lovely about skiing in the sunshine, stopping for a long Italian lunch and then heading back out for a few more runs.
April and Early May: High-Altitude Spring Skiing
Cervinia can continue skiing well into spring, with the highest slopes often providing the best conditions later in the season.
This can be a good option if you enjoy quieter slopes and warmer afternoons, but conditions become increasingly dependent on altitude and weather as the season progresses.
So, When Should You Ski in Cervinia?
If snow conditions are your main priority, January through March are sensible months to consider.
For Christmas atmosphere, December is hard to beat.
For longer days and sunshine, March is particularly appealing.
And if you want to combine Cervinia with Zermatt, remember that conditions can vary considerably across the huge linked ski area, so it’s worth checking the latest piste and lift information before travelling.
For us, the real attraction is having such a long season and the ability to choose a time that suits the type of ski holiday we’re looking for.
Cervinia and Zermatt: Skiing Across Two Countries
One of the biggest attractions of skiing in Cervinia is the chance to ski between Italy and Switzerland in the same day.
Cervinia is linked by lifts and pistes to Zermatt, creating the enormous Matterhorn Ski Paradise. From the Italian side, you can make your way up towards the Theodul Pass and cross into Switzerland, with the Matterhorn providing an incredible backdrop along the way.
It’s not just about ticking off two countries on your ski holiday.
The skiing feels different as you move between the two sides of the mountain, and there are plenty of long runs to explore.
On the Italian side, Cervinia is known for its wide, open pistes and long cruising runs.
Once you cross into Switzerland, you have access to the much larger Zermatt ski area, with more pistes, different mountain scenery and the chance to ski all the way down towards Zermatt village.
One of our favourite things about this kind of skiing is that you can make a real day of it.
Start your morning in Cervinia, cross into Switzerland, ski around Zermatt for a few hours, stop for lunch and then make your way back towards Italy.
Just keep an eye on the time.
The last thing you want is to discover you’ve stayed in Switzerland too long and the lifts connecting back to Cervinia have closed!
It’s also worth remembering that the connection between the two resorts depends on weather and lift operations.
High winds, heavy snow or poor visibility can affect some of the lifts, so always check the conditions before setting off for a full day across the border.
For skiers who enjoy exploring, rather than skiing the same runs every day, the Cervinia-Zermatt connection adds another whole dimension to your holiday.
