One thing we particularly like about Kaprun is that you’re not restricted to glacier skiing.
The wider area includes the Maiskogel ski area, and the connection between Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn means you can combine high-altitude glacier skiing with lower mountain terrain during your holiday.
The Kitzsteinhorn itself has a good mixture of pistes, with easier terrain for less experienced skiers as well as more demanding runs.
There are also spectacular views from the high mountain, including the Hohe Tauern peaks.
For us, this is a resort to consider if snow reliability is more important than having a traditional ski village directly beside every piste.
Kaprun has plenty of restaurants, accommodation and things to do away from the slopes, while the glacier gives you access to some of Austria’s highest skiing.

This gives you a huge amount of terrain to explore over a week, with everything from wide pistes to demanding runs and extensive off-piste opportunities for experienced skiers.
St. Anton is particularly well suited to intermediate and advanced skiers.
There are easier runs for beginners, but we think confident skiers will get the most from the size and variety of the area.
The village itself is another big attraction.

If you’re looking for somewhere quiet and sleepy in the evening, this probably isn’t the Austrian resort we’d choose.

If you’re planning to ski in November or early December, we’d look first at Sölden or Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun because both have glacier skiing at high altitude.

Austria has a long ski season, but the best time to visit depends on what matters most to you.

Expect higher accommodation prices and busy slopes around Christmas and New Year, so booking early is essential.

January is one of our favourite months for skiing in Europe.
The Christmas crowds have usually disappeared, temperatures are colder and snow conditions can be excellent.

If you’re looking for a good combination of snow, skiing and fewer holiday crowds, January is hard to beat.
February – Peak Ski Season
February is another excellent month for skiing in Austria, but it’s also one of the busiest.
School holidays across Europe can make the popular resorts particularly crowded, and accommodation prices are often higher.
The advantage is that by February, the season is well established. Lech, St. Anton, Ischgl, Obertauern and Sölden all give you plenty of skiing to choose from.
If you’re travelling during school holidays, book accommodation and lift passes well ahead.
March – Our Pick for Spring Skiing
March can be a fantastic time to ski in Austria.
There are generally plenty of hours of daylight, the weather can be milder and the slopes can be quieter than during February’s school holidays.
For higher and more snow-reliable skiing, we’d look at Sölden, Ischgl, Lech Zürs and Obergurgl-Hochgurgl.
You can also enjoy sitting outside a mountain hut for lunch on sunny days, which is one of the things we particularly love about spring skiing.

Choosing a snow-sure resort is a great starting point, but a few other decisions can make a big difference to your holiday.
We’ve learnt over the years that a little planning before you leave can save a lot of stress once you arrive.
Book Your Accommodation Early
Austria’s most popular ski resorts can become very expensive during Christmas, New Year and school holidays.
If you already know your dates, it’s worth looking at accommodation early.
This is particularly important in Lech, St. Anton, Ischgl and Obergurgl, where the best-located hotels can book up quickly.
Check the Elevation of Your Accommodation
A high-altitude ski area doesn’t necessarily mean your hotel is high on the mountain.
If snow reliability is your priority, check where the accommodation is actually located and how easily you can reach the lifts.
Staying close to a lift can also make a big difference when you’re carrying skis or travelling with children.
Think About Your Skiing Ability
Don’t choose a resort simply because it has a reputation for excellent snow.
A huge ski area such as St. Anton or Ischgl can be fantastic for experienced skiers, but a quieter resort such as Obergurgl-Hochgurgl may be more enjoyable if you’re still building confidence.
Likewise, families should look at the location of beginner areas, ski schools and easy pistes rather than simply counting kilometres of runs.
Consider the Time of Year
Your resort choice should change depending on when you travel.

This is probably the most important point.
Even Austria’s most snow-reliable resorts can experience warm temperatures, rain, wind or periods with little natural snowfall.
Snowmaking can help keep pistes open, while glacier skiing and higher slopes provide another advantage, but there is no such thing as guaranteed snow.
That’s why we look at altitude, piste elevation, glacier access, snowmaking and the time of year together rather than relying on one factor.
Check What’s Included Before Booking
When comparing accommodation, look beyond the headline price.
Check whether breakfast is included, whether there is a spa or pool, how close you are to the lifts and whether ski storage is available. If you’re driving, check parking costs too.
These extras can make quite a difference to the final cost of your ski holiday.
Book Your Travel Insurance
We never recommend heading to the Alps without suitable travel insurance.
Make sure your policy covers skiing and any activities you plan to take part in, and check the details around medical treatment, piste rescue and cancellations before you travel.
