Alpbach is one of those Austrian ski resorts where the village itself is a big part of the appeal.
Set in the Tyrolean Alps, it is known for its traditional wooden buildings, flower-filled balconies in summer and a strict building style that has helped it retain its distinctive appearance.
But Alpbach is much more than a pretty village.
It is the main gateway to Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, a sizeable ski area that links the Alpbachtal and Wildschönau valleys and gives skiers access to around 109 kilometres of pistes.
The resort is particularly well suited to families and intermediate skiers, with plenty of blue and red runs, but there is also more challenging terrain for experienced skiers.
Away from the slopes, Alpbach has a good selection of traditional restaurants, mountain huts and cosy places to enjoy a drink after skiing.

Alpbach Ski Area
Alpbach is part of Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, which links the Alpbachtal and Wildschönau valleys across four main mountain areas.
The result is a varied ski area with 114 kilometres of pistes, 45 lifts and 25 mountain huts and restaurants.
The skiing is particularly well suited to beginners, families and intermediate skiers, although there is enough more challenging terrain to keep experienced skiers interested.
Around the ski area, the pistes are made up of 31 km of easy runs, 54 km of intermediate runs and 13 km of difficult runs, along with 16 km of marked ski routes.
Skiing Around Alpbach
The main skiing from Alpbach is on Wiedersberger Horn, where you’ll find a good mix of wide, groomed pistes and terrain suitable for different ability levels.
Families and beginners have dedicated learning areas, while more confident skiers can head higher up the mountain and explore the longer red runs.
One of the advantages of the area is that you don’t have to be an expert skier to enjoy a full day here.
There is enough terrain to progress as your confidence improves, while intermediate skiers have plenty of options for exploring.
If you’re looking for more variety, the connection into Wildschönau opens up another part of the Ski Juwel area.
This gives stronger skiers the opportunity to spend different days exploring different mountains rather than skiing the same runs repeatedly.
Snowparks and Ski Routes
There is plenty here for skiers and snowboarders who want something different from traditional piste skiing.
Ski Juwel has two snowparks, along with fun slopes and training areas.
There are also 16 km of marked ski routes, although these are not prepared or controlled like normal pistes and require suitable alpine experience or a qualified ski instructor.

When Is the Best Time to Ski in Alpbach?
Alpbach has a relatively long winter season, with Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau scheduled to operate until 4 April 2027.
The best time to visit depends on whether you want Christmas in the mountains, quieter skiing, school-holiday activities or sunny spring days on the slopes.
December – Christmas in the Alps
December is a lovely time to visit Alpbach if you enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional Austrian Christmas.
The season gets underway in early December, with the main winter season beginning on 4 December 2026.
If you are travelling before Christmas, you can usually expect a quieter resort and lower ski-pass prices than during the main holiday period. From 19 December, Ski Juwel moves into its peak-season pricing period.
Christmas itself is a popular time to visit, so accommodation and ski lessons should be booked well ahead.
January – Great for Quieter Skiing
January is a good choice if skiing is your main priority.
Once the Christmas and New Year holidays are over, Alpbach tends to be quieter, and the colder winter temperatures can provide good snow conditions.
It is also a good month for families who aren’t tied to school holidays, couples and experienced skiers looking for fewer people on the slopes.
February – Peak Winter Season
February is one of the busiest times to ski in Alpbach, particularly around the school holidays.
The resort is popular with families, so expect more people on the slopes and higher demand for accommodation.
The advantage is that you’re visiting during the heart of winter, with plenty of skiing available across Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau.
If you’re travelling during February, book your accommodation, ski hire and lessons early.
March – Our Pick
March is our pick for skiing in Alpbach.
The days are getting longer, temperatures are often more pleasant and you can enjoy the best of the winter season without the Christmas crowds.
Ski Juwel also moves into its lower-season pricing from 13 March 2027, making the second half of March particularly attractive.
There is another reason we like March.
From the beginning of March, Ski Juwel runs First Line Skiing on the Wiedersberger Horn every Saturday, giving early risers the chance to ski freshly prepared pistes from 7am.
For us, that combination of quieter slopes, longer days and spring sunshine makes March a great time to visit.
April – Spring Skiing
April is the end of the season in Alpbach, with skiing scheduled to continue until 4 April 2027.
By this stage, conditions can become more dependent on the weather and altitude, so we would choose early April rather than leave it until the very end of the season.
The upside is longer, brighter days and a more relaxed feel on the mountain.
The later part of the season can work particularly well if you enjoy sitting outside at mountain huts as much as you enjoy skiing.
Our Recommendation
If we were planning a ski trip to Alpbach, we’d choose March, particularly the second half of the month.
You get longer daylight hours, spring sunshine, quieter slopes than the main February holiday period and lower ski-pass prices after 13 March.
Add the chance to experience First Line Skiing on the Wiedersberger Horn, and March gives you a lot to like.

Ski Passes for Alpbach
Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau has a range of ski passes, so you don’t necessarily have to buy a standard full-day or multi-day pass if that doesn’t suit your plans.
For the 2026/27 season, options include hourly passes, single-day and multi-day passes, points cards, season tickets and family passes.
The main Ski Juwel pass gives access to the lifts across Alpbachtal and Wildschönau.
Which Ski Pass Should You Choose?
Day or Multi-Day Pass:
For most visitors staying for a ski holiday, the standard Ski Juwel pass is the simplest option.
You can buy anything from a single day through to longer stays, with prices varying depending on the season.
Hourly Passes:
These are useful if you’re only planning to ski for part of the day, perhaps because you’re travelling with young children or want to combine skiing with other activities.
Points Cards:
Points cards can be particularly useful for beginners who don’t expect to use the lifts all day.
Points are deducted according to the lift used, so you only pay for the journeys you actually take.
Family Passes:
Families have some particularly good options.
The Ski Juwel Young Family Card allows one parent to use the same pass as the other parent on an alternating basis when travelling with children up to five years old.
There are also family season-ticket options.
2026/27 Ski Pass Prices
Ski Juwel uses different prices for pre-season, peak season and late season.
For example, an adult one-day pass is €64.50 in the pre- and late-season periods, compared with €71.50 during peak season.
Multi-day passes are also available, with the price per day becoming lower as the number of skiing days increases.
You can buy Ski Juwel passes online or at the resort ticket offices. Buying online can save time when you arrive, particularly during busy holiday periods.

Restaurants and Bars in the town.
The village offers a variety of restaurants and bars ranging from traditional hearty Tyrolean meals to international cuisine.
Apres-ski is typically Tyrolean, with plenty of mid-afternoon to early evening bars.
On the slope try Joe’s Saletti or the Umbrella Bar next to the Galtenberg ski-lift in lunar Alpbach, are great ski to bars.
Getting to Alpbach
Getting here from Innsbruck is incredibly easy- the journey by car only takes about an hour, and you can also get the train to Brixlegg and then catch the bus up to the town.
By Air
The nearest major airport to Alpbach is Innsbruch airport, located about 55 km away.
Book your flight to Innsbruch, which offers regular flights from major European cities, including London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
Other airports nearby include Munich airport which is about 160km away and Salzberg airport which is 150 km from Alpbach.
By Train
The nearest train station to Alpbach is Brixlegg, which is about 10km from Alpbach, Brixlegg is well connected to major cities in Austria and Germany, with regular services from Innsbruch, Munich, and Salzburg. Brixlegg, you can catch the bus up to the resort, it takes about 20 minutes.
