Getting the keys to our homebase in Italy

Sound Familiar?

Long-term travel in Europe looks complicated from the outside.

The Schengen rules. The visa questions. The accommodation puzzle. Where to base yourself, how long to stay, how to make the money work. The more you look into it, the more it seems like something that requires months of research and a perfect plan before you can even think about leaving.

We felt exactly the same. We arrived in Europe with a colour-coded spreadsheet, bookings made three months in advance, and a timeline that was almost entirely wrong within the first three weeks.

What we discovered — slowly, and mostly by getting things wrong first — is that long-term travel in Europe is considerably simpler than it looks. It does not require a perfect plan. It requires staying longer than feels necessary, and being willing to let a place become familiar.

The moment everything changed was when we booked a place for a month instead of a week and discovered we were paying half the nightly rate. By the second week, the neighbour had invited us in for a drink, we knew the shortcut to the market, and we were, briefly  and genuinely, part of the street.

We bought the large bottle of olive oil. It meant we were staying long enough to finish it. It meant we lived here, at least for now. And something quietly shifted.

Who we are

We are Gary and Sally — Timeless Wanderers.

We sold our home, our cars, and most of our possessions in Australia and headed to Europe with a colour-coded spreadsheet and considerably more luggage than we needed.

That was several years ago.

The spreadsheet lasted three weeks.

The travelling has not stopped since.

We have done more than fifty housesits across the UK and Europe, spent multiple seasons based in Tuscany, and found our way to Albania and Montenegro by accident and stayed by choice.

We write about what long-term travel actually looks like — not the highlight reel, but the ordinary Tuesdays, the hedge-trimming afternoons, and the neighbours who invited us in for a drink because we had been around long enough to be worth knowing.

Everything we share is based on what we have actually done. Including the mistakes.

Start smaller than you think you need to.

One month in one place – A single housesit – A season rather than a year – The rest grows from there.
